Internet Neutrality - Save The Internet

Hmm. I sort of said, "yeah right" when I first heard about this this morning. Because netrality and freeness is really what the internet is all about. And I rarely like to stand behind causes - but since internet is what I do... this one seemed scary enough for my attention.

The bottom line is this: Internet freedom is under attack as Congress pushes a law that would give companies like AT&T the power to control what you do and see online.

Apparently, some bigger companies like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon are wanting to control the internet. They basically want people to pay for their sites be seen. For example, if I don't pay AT&T, x amount of money, my site will load slower and be further down the chain than Harper's site, because Harper may pay AT&T a ton of money.

It is really ruining everything that everyone worked so hard to create. Google for instance has fought hard for freedom and ease of information on the internet. And they are now the major player in the internet. They have made it better through aiding freedom.

So, I guess taking internet neutrality away has already passed in the house - and now it is up to the Senate.

I like the internet, it's really a great tool, probably the greatest tool ever. If it becomes controlled by money, it will basically ruin everything that the internet is built on.

Currently All 14 senators against free internet are republicans.

24 of the 25 senators for free internet are democrats.

I don't know if I'd throw out Google as a great example since they bow to the Chinese government's demands fairly regularly so that they can keep doing business in that country. I'm not so sure that they're as open as much as they're good at catering to particular audiences in order to grow their market.

If you think Net Neutrality is scary, check out DOPA - basically a bill already passed that limits public funds to libraries, schools, and other public institutions if they allow social networking sites to be accessed from their computers. This is to "protect the children," of course. Because social networking is for pedophiles.
