I can do it with We-mo app, but have to open it to do it. What do you have that does it without opening the app? A motion sensor of some sort?

I use SmartThings. It's a home automation platform that hooks to all sorts of things... Lights, smart outlets, switches, door sensors, leak sensors, motion sensors, etc. It also uses your smart phones as presence sensors... so you can set up all sorts of rules based on presence, time, temperature, motion or other conditions.
Our couch lamps turn on every night at sunset (if we're home). Every morning, I have a light come on down stairs when kari wakes up (provided the sun hasn't risen yet), that then turns off when she leaves for work.
When we both leave the house, it knows (cause our phones are gone) sets itself into away mode... so if any doors open or whatever while away, we get text messages instantly. This mode also turns off any music playing in the house, shuts off some lights, etc.
Once we come back, the house knows because our phones are there. and you can use these things to turn on lights, start the music back up, etc.
