I had to kill a return vent in our master bedroom when I moved a wall during our remodel... which didn't really bother us until we had to turn the heat on this winter... The simplest way to put one back in meant cutting a hole and building a box in a super tight space. So a bit of scrap plywood, pocket holes, and flashing did the trick!
