  • Starting to stain the first couple posts
  • My tent for finishing the newel posts in our already finished home.
  • Finishing the pre-installed newel posts required so much prep work
  • Then I had to mask everything that I'd already installed in order to finish the newel posts
  • Finished banister caps and base boards.
  • I masked the glue points of all of the wooden banister pieces before finishing
  • Finishing all of the trim pieces in my shop
  • Setting everything in place before disassembling to finish.
  • Look at this fit.
  • Once my newel post hole jig was made, I used a combination of a multi-tool, Japanese pull saw and chisels to cut it out.
  • I made a jig in order to help me make a clean, square hole to inset the bottom newel post into the curb.
  • Then it was back to the tricky part... Getting the rest of the angled pieces fit and cut.
  • Every project is an excuse to buy some new tools, so... I decided to pick up a thickness planer to get this thing cleaned up. It just baaarely fit into my car.
  • Added some CRI 90 under cabinet lights to the shop. No more shadows on the work bench!
  • The top of the banister set in place
  • For the top of the banister, I ripped and planed down some 6" boards and then cut the miters and scribes at the wall.
  • Starting on the top of the banister... oh yea. that's a tight miter
  • There was a lot of drilling, routing, and precise cuts to get everything to fit properly.
  • Th hidden spline on the banister cap
  • Hoping to keep hardware to a minimum, I joined the banister cap and base boards together with dowels and glue. I had one joint where it wasn't going to be possible to fit things together this way, so I made a little hidden spline.
  • The nook. Next: some kind of floating shelves. Still trying to decide on a format for those...

  • Top faced with holes drilled to conceal the wires of a Technics 1200.
  • Top scribed. Happy with the fit.
  • Transferring scribe lines to the lid
  • For the top, I scribed a strip of plywood for each side, tacked them together and then used that as a guide to cut the removable lid.
  • Ready to hold some records...
  • 4-coats of poly applied.
  • Boxes stained up! This dark, alkyd stain is really a pain in the ass to work with on pre-assembled pieces.
  • A close-up of the faced shelves
  • I added 5" supports to the bottom to be able to conceal my Sonos connect and pre-amp below the unit.
  • Inner shelves faced
  • I ripped down some 3/8" x 3/4" strips of solid oak to face the inner shelves.
  • Gettin excited
  • Trying to decide on the format for the top... A recessed turntable? Or just a flat top and an exposed turntable.
  • Shelves assembled, testing out the initial fit
  • Instead of a box with a shelf and a divider inside, I made 2, full length horizontal shelves that are fully supported by the sides and divider. This way there's no chance of the heavy records causing any kind of sagging.
  • Starting shelf 2...
  • Starting the bottom record shelf...
  • It's time.
  • The time has come
  • When you're impatient with the oil-based stain, you get a super blotchy coat rack.
  • Sunday fun day. Building a small coat rack for guests.
