Mosso Sucks. I Need a New Host.

Well, let me rephrase that. Mosso tries hard to be awesome - they just released a beta application without the beta label. Harper convinced me to join Mosso based primarily on the billing/user management system - which rules by the way... but it's really the only part that rules.

When I first joined Mosso, Harper and I got to have a conference with one of the founders of Mosso, Todd Morey. It went really well; we all liked each others input, and aside from a few minor provisioning bugs, it seemed like things would work out really nicely.

The fact of the matter is that my sites are not reliable. I know nothing about server management, but when I had my own box, I was down less in 2 years than I have been in 2 months with Mosso.

Between databases, mail, and php being down... It's awful. In fact, it's embarrassing. All of my sites have had issues since moving to Mosso. All of my clients and visitors are like, "this is broken." "that is broken." "yo, your service sucks." And it's completely out of my hands. I honestly can't do anything. I call from baseball games, I IM them at 3am, and I wait. It seems I have to contact them at least 5 times a week for something being broken. It's a nice change from my last server in that I actually get to talk to humans for free. But it's also a really poor change because I'm forced to use that free service - often.

Mosso has helped me out by comping me free hosting when they're down... but I don't want free hosting, I want websites that work.

What I want in a server
  1. A reliable host. One that is truly up 100% of the time.
  2. A way to easily bill my clients. Setting up clients and sites is amazing on Mosso. I will really hate leaving this. The only problem is - I've been too embarrased by Mosso's service, that I've never billed one of my clients.
  3. The ability to alias sites within the server. This is important for the alive sites.
  4. Solid e-mail.
  5. LOGS. Mosso doesn't give us access to logs at all. "It's on the to-do list" with everything else.
  6. SSH. I miss you.
  7. Good free customer service. Mosso has that one nailed, even if some of their representatives are incompetant.
  8. A reasonable price tag. I'm willing to pay if it works, but don't murder me. And I have a hard time trusting those $20 hosting plans.
I really don't want to do another migration. That's how Mosso's currently winning.

if you move servers again you better put a test site out on the new one for a while to make sure it works before making me move my sites again. ;)

Sorry to hear about your experience. You should try ServerBeach out. They were built by Rackspace and are owned now by PEER 1 Network. You get a dedicated server at a reasonable price with enough support to get by. You can also choose between 3 datacenters across the US. Call 1-800-741-9939, ext 3 and ask for Roger or Javier. You can also email [email protected].

I have to admit that serverbeach looks VERY promising.

Thanks for posting this. I have a dedicated server at Rackspace and love it (although it's crazy expensive). I'd been looking at getting Mosso as a possible mail solution for clients who don't want to pay for Noteworthy accounts, but it sounds like that might be a bad idea.

BTW, I found this by searching Google for "mosso sucks" (I've found it's a good practice to search for "hostname X sucks" before pulling the trigger)

Rackspace funded Mosso too. :)

Rackspace might have helped "fund" Mosso, but Mosso is not a spin off from Rackspace like Serverbeach is. Two totally different companies! Have you looked at going to Rackspace?

If you want true 100% uptime you need a server from Rackspace - there is no other option. ServerBeach, MT...laugh!
I've been with Mosso for 6 months...and I haven’t any problems at all. I haven’t had the need to call support in over 4 months. The last time I did was to figure out a provisioning problem that never happened again. The price is right, the customer service is better than any competitors and the system/features are getting better and better by the month.again. Mosso is absurdly SLOW - at least for .NET sites. If you want to frustrate your customers, then they are the place to host.

We hosted a .NET site with Mosso for almost a month now. The site is not resource intensive and does not use a database. After numerous customer complaints we did some intensive testing. The average response time is well over 2000 ms per request.

The admin's claim it is a RAM fragmentation issue on the .NET servers. Be warned. This is killing us and we have to look elsewhere.

Yes, I was a customer of Mosso for nearly half a year and just ended my account w/ them. It's not worth the headache, trust me.

where did you go, william?

and mosso just put a 3 million request limit on their accounts. i have under 20 relatively small sites live on my account and am pushing 3 million requests a day without making a dent in my bandwidth or disk space usage. something seems a little off here...

my friend has gotten 5 million requests on his account in just a week. they're charging 3 cents for every 1000 you go over.

wtf.

they either need to change this or i will be forced to leave mosso. ...just when things were starting to work well. sad.

hi Derek,

So are you now paying more than $100 per month?
nope, i am still paying $100 a month.

probably going to move to a new host shortly.

they upped the old timers' accounts (including mine) to 10 million requests, but all new people will still get 3 million. lame.

i see..

Very keen to see who will be your new host..
Mosso too expensive? If anyone is interested in sharing the cost of Mosso with me, I'd be willing to set you up with one (or a few if needed) of the client accounts for a good price. Just need a few people to help offset my costs. I'm thinking $10 for me, plus the set fees at Mosso (for example, $5 for 100mb of MS SQL, etc). I can be flexible with price depending on what you're looking for. I'm willing to set you up with unlimited email boxes and databases since they're free anyway!

Please contact me at MossoReseller at gmail.com if you're interested.

Hey Derek,

Are you still having outage issues with Mosso? How do you like the mail hosting with Mosso?

I have been at dreamhost and have had big problems with their mail hosting. It's made me mad, because my customers have been upset.

I'm looking for a better host - currenly paying about $100 per month at dreamhost to host 100-200 sites. I'm looking at the file hits on our stats and I think we are OK for 3 million requests.

Thanks,

Vi

principalwebsolutions.com

ps. Harper was the one who told me about Mosso too.
Hi Vi, I don't have as many outage problems with Mosso, however there are frequent performance problems. they recently setup a new image caching box, however it seems to have made my images load much, much slower. It's quite ridiculous.

Sometimes my sites are blazing fast, and sometimes they're just crawling. It's very inconsistent.

As far as email hosting goes, I don't use Mosso's email hosting. Like you point out, email is something that people EXPECT to be reliable. Given the rest of Mosso's service, I don't trust their email hosting... so I use Google Hosted Apps for all of my email solutions.

Hope that helps.

I could host you. I've hosted a small amount of people on my server for about 4 years now and have not had any downtime (very proud to say that). My server is housed in a premium data center in Orlando Florida (category 5 storm resistant).

Here are some specs on my server:

> Two quad core Intel Xeon processors, 2.00 Ghz each

> 6 Gb of RAM

> 100Mbps connection

> Monitored 24/7

Here is what I can do for you:

> 4,000 Mb disk space

> 400,000 Mb bandwidth / month

> $4.00 per month

-----------------------------------------

> 8,000 Mb disk space

> 800,000 Mb bandwidth /month

> $8.00 per month

-----------------------------------------

> 12,000 Mb disk space

> 1,200,000 Mb bandwidth / month

> $12.00 per month

Or we could work out a deal on a customized plan if you would prefer that.

I started hosting with Mosso a little while ago after testing the service out. It seems as if they have made some improvements because I haven't had a problem. The beta control panel isn't as fast as the old one, but maybe that's because it's beta...doesn't really matter. We use .NET and we are a SaaS company - 100% of our systems are running on ASP.NET 2.0.

I have not experienced any downtime and the system is quite fast - even on the .net framework. I just wanted to give a little update, it seems as most of these posts are 6+ months old - maybe they have fixed the problems...

Write back - im interested to hear other opinions.
