Hoping to keep hardware to a minimum, I joined the banister cap and base boards together with dowels and glue. I had one joint where it wasn't going to be possible to fit things together this way, so I made a little hidden spline.

There was a lot of drilling, routing, and precise cuts to get everything to fit properly.

For the top of the banister, I ripped and planed down some 6" boards and then cut the miters and scribes at the wall.

Climbed over 30 flights of stairs without leaving the house today... "Perks" of having a shop in the basement and building stuff for the main floor.
